Environment Ministry's conditional clearances to Adani's 2,640 MW and Torrent's 800 MW expansion project

The coal-based plant to be built by Adani Power Dahej Ltd., a unit of the Gautam Adani-led group, will comprise four units of 660 MW each, the ministry said on its website. The project is estimated to come up at about 147.06 billion rupees ($3.31 billion).Torrent Energy Ltd., a unit of Torrent Power, will build a 1,200 MW gas-based project in Dahej in Gujarat, according to the company's website. The project will comprise three units of 400 MW each. The conditional approvals were given by the expert appraisal committee of the ministry last month and formally issued this week on the ministry's website.
A top panel of India's federal environment ministry has recommended giving conditional environmental clearances to Adani Power Ltd.'s 2,640 megawatts plant and Torrent Power Ltd.'s 800 MW expansion project in the western state of Gujarat.
Getting environmental clearance is a major hurdle for several major power projects in India, ranging from coal-fired to hydroelectric projects. This often leads to delays in companies adding capacity.
While clearing the two projects, the panel of eight members has, among other things, asked the two companies to keep a constant check on pollution from the proposed plants, spend on charity and local area development as well as conserve and regenerate nearby mangroves.
Torrent Group spokesman Sandeep Nair didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment. Executives from Adani Group couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
The committee's job is to make recommendations to the environment ministry, which gives the final clearance to project.
The committee, however, deferred a decision on a number of projects such as JSW Energy Ltd.'s proposed 1,320 MW plant in the central state of Chhattisgarh; a 1,320 MW coal-based project of Torrent Power in northern Uttar Pradesh; and a 64 MW unit planned by Nava Bharat Ventures Ltd. in eastern Orissa state. Executives of these companies couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
