TATA Power plans to set up its own a logistics arm to meet coal needs of Mundra ultra mega power projects

One of India’s largest power producer Tata Power plans to set up its own a logistics arm to meet coal needs of Mundra ultra mega power projects (UMPP). The company currently operates logistics via its Singapore subsidiary Trust Energy. The primary rationale for Trust Energy is to securitize coal supply and shipping of coal for Tata Power’s thermal power generation operations.

The company aims to supply coal from Indonesia to Mundra UMPP. Sources say Tata requires eight ships to transport coal to the project. It has already acquired two cape size ships of 1,80,000 deadweight tonnes (DWT), which are due for delivery in 2011. Tata Power Eastern Energy has also entered into a charter agreement for three ships. And may acquire or go for long-term charter for another three ships directly.
