UJVN-GAIL to invest Rs 2,500 crore in 2 power projects

State-run hydropower company Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam (UJVN) will invest Rs 2,500 crore to set up two gas-based power plants in a joint venture with GAIL.

Stating this, UJVN Managing Director G P Patel said the company has got 50 acres of land in Kashipur and has identified another 55 acres of land in Haridwar for the two gas plants.
UJVN has already taken the Cabinet approval in this regard, Patel said.
In June, last year, UJVN had signed an MoU with GAIL to set up the two gas-based power plants of 350 MW each. A total of Rs 2,500 crore is proposed to be invested in the two power plants.
The majority of the power from these power plants would be sold to Uttarakhand through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA).
"The gas pipeline has already been brought to Kashipur by GAIL and this project is expected to be completed by 2015-16," Patel said.

Similarly, the gas pipeline for Haridwar is also at advance stage and the project is expected to be completed by 2015-16 also, he said.

Initially these two projects will be of 350 MW but later the capacity of these projects would be increased to 450 MW, he said.
With the hydropower sector taking a beating due to heightened environmental and religious concerns in India, several hydropower companies have now chalked out plans to diversify into gas-based power.
Meanwhile, the Karanpur-Moradabad-Kashipur-Rudrapur-Pant Nagar Natural Gas Pipeline which will be of 182 km in length is at final stages of completion. The estimated investment on the project is Rs 250 crore. The design capacity of the pipeline will be 2.5 MMSCMD.

The pipeline will supply gas to upcoming power plant in Kashipur in Uttarakhand and to other industrial customers in Moradabad, Kashipur and Rudrapur and for City Gas Distribution in Moradabad.
Similarly, GAIL is also bringing another pipeline from Saharanpur to Haridwar.
