The Commerce Ministry wants substantially higher duty on import of power equipment than the 14% proposed by the Power Ministry to safeguard the interest of domestic manufacturers like BHEL.The current proposal will not protect their (domestic players) interest ... If we really want to protect them, the basic customs duty should be raised substantially, an official said. The Power Ministry has proposed for levying 14% duty on imported power gear, mainly from China. The move was aimed providing a level-playing field to domestic manufacturers like BHEL and Larsen & Toubro.Domestic power equipment makers like BHEL and L&T have been demanding 14% duty on imported electrical equipment in order to provide them a cushion against local taxes.
